Editing checklist: How I use writing synonyms during revision?

I've developed a revision routine that includes scanning for overused words. On my first read-through, I highlight every word I've used more than twice. Then I go back and find synonyms for the extras. Common culprits for me: important, shows, really, very, thing, got. Once I identify my crutch words, I brainstorm alternatives before I start editing. That way I'm not stopping every sentence to think.

I also check for repetitive sentence openings. If three sentences in a row start with "The," I rephrase. Sometimes that means finding a synonym, sometimes it means restructuring entirely. This system has made my revisions more efficient and my writing more varied. If you struggle with repetition, try this approach. It works.

Derek, this is genius! 😮 I never thought to identify my crutch words BEFORE starting edits – I usually just stare at a sentence and panic-spiral about synonyms until I forget what I was even trying to say. "Important" is definitely one of mine too. And "very." Always "very." Do you use any specific tools for finding synonyms, or just a regular thesaurus? I've been using Word's built-in one but sometimes the suggestions feel... off. Like technically correct but not the vibe of my essay. Would love to know your workflow! 🙏
